Anthropic’s Upcoming IPO Set to Unlock Billions for Early and Late-Stage Backers
Investors who entered the company at valuations ranging from hundreds of millions to hundreds of billions are positioned for massive gains ahead of a potential public listing valued at up to $2 trillion.

Anthropic is poised to list on public markets later this year, with expectations that the valuation could reach as high as $2 trillion. This anticipated move represents a significant financial milestone for the artificial intelligence firm and its investors. Even at the company’s most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the stakes held by venture capital firms and early backers already aggregate to billions of dollars. The upcoming public offering is expected to further amplify these returns, creating a substantial windfall for those who invested at various stages of the company’s growth.
Among the most notable beneficiaries is Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt participated in Anthropic’s Series A funding round in 2021, a period when the startup’s valuation stood at $461 million. His early entry point has proven lucrative; he currently holds approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, this minority stake is valued at nearly $10 billion, a figure that is likely to rise significantly once the shares are traded publicly.
Late-stage investors have also seen their portfolios grow substantially. Iconiq, an investment firm, committed $6 billion to Anthropic last year, at a time when the company was already valued at $183 billion. This massive injection of capital has since appreciated to a value of $17 billion. Analysts suggest that this position has the potential to double in value following the initial public offering, reflecting the continued strength of the AI sector in the investment landscape.
Menlo Ventures, which led the company’s Series D round, has maintained a long-term financial commitment to Anthropic. The firm has invested more than $1 billion in the startup over the course of its operations. This sustained investment has resulted in a stake currently valued at $14 billion, underscoring the firm’s confidence in the company’s long-term trajectory and its ability to scale within the competitive AI market.
Sequoia, a prominent venture capital firm, entered the partnership with Anthropic later in the timeline. The firm first backed the AI lab earlier this year, when the company’s valuation had already climbed to $380 billion. Sequoia’s $3 billion investment secured it roughly 1% ownership in the company. Despite entering at a high valuation, this position has already more than doubled the initial investment amount, highlighting the rapid appreciation of Anthropic’s equity in the private markets.
Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also built a significant position in Anthropic. The company initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. Since then, Sound Ventures has funneled an additional $400 million into the startup. While the exact current value of this combined stake is described as being worth billions, the firm’s ongoing commitment illustrates the depth of capital flowing into the sector. Notably, Kutcher departed Sound Ventures earlier this year to establish a new venture capital firm.
Spark Capital holds a unique position as the only venture capital firm known to occupy a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million during the same 2023 Series C round, when Anthropic was valued at $5 billion. This early entry at a comparatively lower valuation has proven exceptionally rewarding. Spark Capital’s position has expanded more than ninetyfold, reaching a current value of $7 billion, a testament to the explosive growth of the company since that initial funding stage.
